JSP-N launches nationwide protest drive demanding sweeping constitutional changes

Janata Samajbadi Party, Nepal (JSP-N) announced that it would hold demonstrations, grassroots meetings, and public movements in cities and market areas across all parliamentary constituencies, starting November 27.

JSP-N Chairperson Upendra Yadav appealed to party members and the general public to participate in the protests. He stated that the first phase of the protests will continue until January 1, 2026.

The party released a 28-point memorandum calling for constitutional amendments, state restructuring, full provincial autonomy, and stronger powers for local governments, as well as fair representation for Dalits and women.

The memorandum claims that the promulgation of the Constitution did not reflect public sentiment. JSP-N has accused the government of neglecting citizens’ interests in favour of its vested agenda. 

The party argues that federalism has not been effectively implemented, leading to growing public dissatisfaction. To address this, JSP-N demands constitutional revisions with concrete provisions to strengthen and institutionalise federalism.

JSP-N emphasises ensuring access to authority through full proportional and inclusive representation to promote social justice and calls for the implementation of indigenous rights as outlined in international conventions.

The party has also urged the government to prioritise scientific land use, modernisation and commercialisation of agriculture, and improved market management, claiming these measures align with the aspirations of the country’s youth population.

Other key demands include restructuring parliamentary constituencies based on population, reserving seats specifically for Dalits and women, establishing a directly elected president, and ensuring proportional representation in parliament.

JSP-N has also called for the release of protesters involved in the Madhesh and Tharuhat uprisings. The party expressed support for demonstrations concerning the naming of Koshi Province and the conservation of the Mukkumlung (Pathibhara) area.
